Kickbacks.ai works by patching the Claude Code VS Code extension, and the Codex VS Code panel is supported and earns too. While the assistant is working, a short sponsored line appears in or alongside its 'thinking…' indicator, in the editor's thinking line, banner and status bar; Kickbacks.ai says you see sponsored lines before signing in but earn only while signed in. You install it from kickbacks.ai/install or by pasting npx -y @kickbacksai/install into your coding assistant.
The Claude Code terminal CLI is supported too: its status-bar line works on any version, and the sponsored spinner verb needs Claude Code 2.1.143 or newer. Its FAQ says the VS Code extension is still required to earn from the terminal, the Codex terminal CLI doesn't earn, and other standalone terminals such as Warp, iTerm2 and tmux may show a sponsored line without earning yet. The extension isn't on Open VSX, and it also loads over Remote-SSH, WSL, devcontainers and VS Code Insiders.
Kickbacks.ai says you earn per qualified impression, which targets 10 continuous seconds on screen, with measured dwell from 9.5 seconds accepted, and that background sub-agent waits and closed editors earn nothing. Its FAQ and Terms put the developer's share at an estimated 50% of net ad revenue, which the Terms define as after operational expenses. It says eligible earnings are paid in batches roughly every two weeks via Stripe Connect once the balance passes the payout threshold, US $10.00 in the Terms.
Private Mode shares the ad shown, visible time, clicks, a pseudonymous ID, hashed email, truncated IP address, device basics and approximate location, and keeps your prompts, code and AI responses on your machine. Boosted Mode, a separate opt-in that Kickbacks.ai says earns more, also sends your recent prompts and conversation, the model's replies, other open sessions' titles, file types, repo name and recent work topics to its servers, and ad partners receive a cleaned copy and a derived interest profile.
