Gemini in Chrome

Google's Gemini assistant built into the Chrome browser, using your open tabs as context.

What is Gemini in Chrome, in two sentences

Gemini in Chrome is Google's AI assistant built into the Chrome browser: it answers questions using your open tabs and, on Chromebook Plus, Mac and Windows, opens in a side panel. Auto browse, which does multi-step tasks for you, is only for Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and Ultra (from $99.99 a month) subscribers in the U.S.

About Gemini in Chrome

Google's Chrome page says Gemini in Chrome is built in to Chrome, with no extension needed. On a computer you click Ask Gemini at the top of the browser, or use a keyboard shortcut you set up, opt in the first time and chat in the side panel, which can pop out or dock. By default it uses the content of your current tab, and you can share up to 10 open tabs or add one to a prompt by typing @.

Google's help page lists tasks such as summarizing an article, explaining a complex topic, comparing information across pages, completing multi-step actions on your behalf, drafting messages with Gmail, looking up your past photos and albums, and asking about audio and video you played. You can talk to it with Gemini Live and switch between Gemini models, and Google's Chrome page adds making or editing images and saving prompts as Skills.

Google says Gemini in Chrome is different from the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com, which works in other browsers but cannot share page content or use Live mode. On iPhone or iPad, Google's Chrome page says you find the Ask Gemini button by opening Chrome and tapping Page tools at the top of the browser.

To use it on a computer you need the latest version of Chrome, a signed-in Chrome profile (it is not available in Incognito mode), a supported region and a supported language, and work or school accounts need an administrator to enable access. Google says it is releasing Gemini in Chrome gradually, so it may not be available to you yet.
