Google's Android 17 release, which opens app features to AI agents through AppFunctions and an on-device MCP.
Android 17 is Google's June 2026 Android release, which Google calls the start of a transition to an intelligence system; through AppFunctions, apps can offer their actions as tools for AI agents and assistants. It is out on most supported Pixel devices, in beta on some partner devices, and as source code in AOSP.
About Android 17
Google released Android 17 on 16 June 2026 and says it is transforming Android from an operating system to an intelligence system through deep integration between hardware, software and AI. The release also moves app development to an adaptive-first standard: apps that target it can no longer opt out of resizing and orientation changes on large screens, and the system enforces stricter memory limits based on a device's RAM.
For AI, Android 17 expands AppFunctions, a platform API with a Jetpack library: apps describe their actions as tools for Android MCP, which Google calls the on-device equivalent of the Model Context Protocol, and AI agents and assistants such as Google Gemini can discover and run them for the user with access to the app's local state. Apps that use the device's NPU directly, for example through the LiteRT NPU delegate, must now declare it in their manifest.
Over-the-air updates and downloads are available for Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 through the Pixel 10a, including Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold, and Google says new devices running Android 17 will follow in the coming months. Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Sharp, vivo and Xiaomi offer it in beta on some devices, and developers can also test it in the Android Emulator or with a generic system image.
For users, Android's feature page lists Screen Reactions, which records your screen and front camera together and comes first to Pixel devices, Bubbles that now go beyond chats and let you switch between more than two apps, with a bubble bar on foldables, a Location Button, remappable gamepad controls and Mark as Lost in Find Hub. The developer blog adds Continue On, which suggests the app you last used on your phone in your tablet's taskbar.
