Context Engine

Hosted memory that Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP tools save to and read from, shared with your team.

What is Context Engine, in two sentences

Context Engine, built by Relote, is a hosted memory that AI tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT and Cursor fill with decisions, notes and files over MCP as they work, and that your team can browse and question. Free gives an engine 1 agent and 1 GB; Pro is $12 a month or $99 a year per engine, and people are free on every plan.

About Context Engine

You connect each AI tool once: ChatGPT and Claude take a few clicks, Claude Code takes one command and Cursor an Add to Cursor link, and anything else that speaks MCP or HTTP connects with a key. As they work, tools save typed memories such as decisions, notes, people, customers and files, each showing which tool saved it and keeping its history, and a new session starts with a brief of what each engine is for and what changed since the tool's last visit.

An engine is a memory with a purpose, described in a sentence or two that your tools read to decide what to save where, and you can keep one for yourself, one per client or project and one for a team. Each connection reaches only the engines you tick, at Can read or Can read and save, and a search across engines names the engine each result came from.

People use the same memory in the app: they browse every memory and who saved it, ask questions whose answers name the memories they came from, read daily summaries rolled into weeks and months, and drop in files, a whole folder or a .zip. Context Engine also links related memories and catches duplicates, pointing a tool that tries to save something already there to the existing memory, and every change records who made it, with which tool.

Every engine gets its own database, search index and running copy of the service on Cloudflare; content is sent to models only to answer you and is not used for training, and support opens an engine only when you approve a request, with every visit logged. Plans are set per engine: Free has 1 agent (up to 3 through referrals) and 1 GB, Pro 10 agents and 25 GB for $12 a month or $99 a year, and Unlimited unlimited agents and 100 GB for $39 a month or $299 a year, in US dollars before VAT or sales tax.

Context Engine pros and cons

Pros

  • People cost nothing on any plan: you can invite a whole team as owner, admin, member or viewer at no cost per person.
  • An engine exports at any time as one ZIP of Markdown and JSON that opens without Context Engine, with every memory a plain Markdown file.
  • A full engine refuses new memories with the reason but deletes nothing, and cancelling a paid plan returns the engine to Free without deleting what it holds.
  • You can cut off any tool's access in a click, and when someone leaves, what they saved stays in the engine, still credited to them.

Cons

  • Free allows 1 agent per engine, or up to 3 through referrals, and every signed-in app or key counts as an agent, so Claude Code and Cursor on one engine are two.
  • Context Engine is memory only: it is not a chatbot and does not run your agents.
  • Paid plans are per engine, so each upgraded engine has its own plan, renewal date and invoice.
  • Enterprise, which runs on your own server, needs one with Postgres 16 and pgvector, a Claude subscription and an OpenAI API key, and people cannot sign in to it with Okta or Entra ID.

Frequently asked questions

What is Context Engine?
Context Engine is a hosted memory that Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP tools save to and read from, shared with your team.
Is Context Engine free?
Context Engine offers a free tier and paid plans with higher limits or premium features.
What are the alternatives to Context Engine?
The closest alternatives to Context Engine are Hexis Cloud, Notion: Context for your agents, Memoriq.
What are the downsides of Context Engine?
Free allows 1 agent per engine, or up to 3 through referrals, and every signed-in app or key counts as an agent, so Claude Code and Cursor on one engine are two. Context Engine is memory only: it is not a chatbot and does not run your agents. Paid plans are per engine, so each upgraded engine has its own plan, renewal date and invoice. Enterprise, which runs on your own server, needs one with Postgres 16 and pgvector, a Claude subscription and an OpenAI API key, and people cannot sign in to it with Okta or Entra ID.
What is Context Engine?
Context Engine is a hosted memory shared by your AI tools and your team: tools save to it through MCP as they work and read from it when a session starts, and people browse it and ask it questions in the app. Relote built it and runs it, and it does not run your agents itself.
Which AI tools work with Context Engine, including Hermes?
Its help pages list the chat apps ChatGPT, Claude and Grok, the coding tools Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and Gemini CLI, and the agents Hermes, OpenClaw and Paperclip. Any other app that adds remote MCP servers can connect, and scripts you build use a key.
How much does Context Engine cost?
Plans are per engine, and people are free on every plan. Free is $0 with 1 agent and 1 GB; Pro is $12 a month or $99 a year with 10 agents and 25 GB; Unlimited is $39 a month or $299 a year with unlimited agents and 100 GB. Prices are in US dollars before VAT or sales tax.
What counts as an agent?
Each app you sign in, each personal key and each engine key connected to an engine is one agent there, so Claude Code and Cursor on the same engine count as two. Asking in the app is not an agent, and once an engine has all the agents its plan allows, a new connection is refused with the reason.
Can I run Context Engine on my own server?
Yes, with Enterprise: Relote installs and runs it on your server for your organisation alone, priced per install and billed by the year, and the installed version keeps running if you stop paying. You bring the server with Postgres 16 and pgvector, a Claude subscription and an OpenAI API key.
