Background
Google rolled AI Overviews from Search Labs to the main results page through 2024. Coverage depends on query intent — informational queries are more likely to trigger an Overview than transactional ones. Publishers optimise for citation rather than for click-through, since the Overview often answers without a click. Position-zero CTR has compressed across most informational SERPs as a result.
