Best AI Image Generators in 2026
ChatGPT, running OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5, is the best AI image generator for most people: 9.0 out of 10. OpenAI's models top the blind-vote arena, its editing is the strongest of the chat assistants, and there is a free plan, with Go at $8 a month. Gemini scores 8.6 and costs less to upgrade.
This ranking scores 13 image generators against one rubric. Image quality carries the most weight. It is read from Artificial Analysis's blind-vote arena, where people pick the better of two images without knowing which model made them, and from what reviewers at Zapier, CNET and PCMag found. Prompt accuracy, editing, price, usage rights and user ratings make up the rest.
Some apps let you pick other companies' models: Adobe Firefly, Krea, Leonardo and Recraft all offer OpenAI's GPT Image and Google's Nano Banana. We score each app on its own models and say where it hosts others. Midjourney is not on the arena, so it is scored on reviews alone.
We did not test these products. Each score is our reading of the evidence linked under it: blind-vote arena results, published reviews, the vendors' own pages and user ratings. No tool paid to be ranked, and payment never changes a score.

- In Youri van Hofwegen's free-tier test, Ideogram was the weakest in almost every round despite spelling correctly. Youri van Hofwegen (YouTube) ↗
- Digital Camera World finds Ideogram still renders text, especially longer phrases, more neatly than rivals, but rates its realism and prompt adherence behind the latest Google, Black Forest Labs and Midjourney models. Digital Camera World ↗

Leonardo.AI
Assessed: Leonardo's own Lucid Origin and Phoenix models, plus the hosted models
Leonardo, owned by Canva, is a toolbox: LoRA training on your own images, an editor that runs GPT Image and Nano Banana, and 80-plus models on paid plans. Its own models sit far down the blind-vote arena, at 89th and below, and the free plan picks the model for you and makes everything public. Users rate it well, at 4.7 on Trustpilot.
- Strength
- Elements let you train a LoRA on your own images of a face, style or product and reuse it across generations.
- Limitation
- Its terms give Leonardo ownership of free-plan images, while its help centre says free users may use them commercially.
- Price
- Free: 150 tokens a day, with the model chosen for you. Essential is $12 a month.
What users report
- Leonardo scores 4.7 on Trustpilot from about 1,600 reviews; recent reviews praise support for quick billing and refund fixes. Trustpilot ↗

Midjourney
Assessed: Midjourney V8.2, the default since July 24, 2026
Reviewers still pick Midjourney for looks: CNET calls it the most creative generator it tested, and Zapier says it makes some of the most visually appealing images. Others have passed it on prompt accuracy and text, it has no free plan or trial on its website or Discord, and its images are public unless you pay for Pro or Mega.
- Strength
- Its Edit Model changes images from written instructions and builds new ones from up to four reference images.
- Limitation
- No free plan, and a company with more than $1M in annual revenue must buy Pro or Mega to own what it makes.
- Price
- No free plan, and no trial on the website or Discord. Basic is $10 a month or $96 a year.
What users report
- On Trustpilot, midjourney.com scores 1.7 from 373 reviews; recent complaints describe accounts blocked after renewal with no clear explanation and poor support. Trustpilot ↗
- Midjourney has no iPhone app of its own; its anime-focused niji・journey app is rated 4.4 from 584 ratings. Apple App Store ↗

- Zapier says other generators have overtaken Midjourney on quality, but it still produces some of the most visually appealing results. Zapier ↗
- CNET scores Midjourney V8.2 at 6.5 out of 10 and calls it the most creative generator it tested, but not one for ultrarealistic or stock-photo images. CNET ↗
- Christy Tucker reports her best results for visual metaphors and symbolic images come from Midjourney. Experiencing eLearning (Christy Tucker) ↗
- In Dan Kieft's comparison, Midjourney had the best style in the cinematic test. Dan Kieft (YouTube, sponsored by Higgsfield) ↗
- Zapier says Midjourney's prompt adherence, editing controls and text are no longer state of the art, and notes it has no API, so it is missing from the arena. Zapier ↗
- The Edit Model changes an image from written instructions, builds images from up to four references and powers inpainting and outpainting in the web Editor. Midjourney ↗
- Midjourney says no free trial is offered on the website or in Discord; only its separate niji・journey app has a limited trial. Midjourney ↗
- Basic costs $10 billed monthly or $96 a year and includes about 3.3 hours of fast generation; unlimited Relax mode starts with Standard at $30 a month. Midjourney ↗
- You own your outputs, but a company with more than $1M in annual revenue, or its employees, must be on Pro or Mega to own them. Users indemnify Midjourney, not the other way round. Midjourney ↗
- Images are public by default; Stealth mode, which hides them, comes only with Pro and Mega. Midjourney ↗
- Deadline reported in October 2026 that Disney and NBCUniversal's copyright suit against Midjourney is ongoing and that Warner Bros. Discovery has also sued. Deadline ↗
- On Trustpilot, midjourney.com scores 1.7 from 373 reviews; recent complaints describe accounts blocked after renewal with no clear explanation and poor support. Trustpilot ↗

Stable Diffusion
Assessed: Stable Diffusion 3.5, self-hosted or through Stability's API
Stable Diffusion lives on through free local tools such as ComfyUI, which has 145,000 GitHub stars. Stability itself has shipped no new image model in 2026, its consumer app now redirects to an enterprise page, and TechCrunch reports the company is being rebuilt around music.
- Strength
- Free to run locally for anyone under $1M in annual revenue, with mature local tools such as ComfyUI.
- Limitation
- No new model since SD 3.5 in October 2024, and it does not appear on the current arena board.
- Price
- Free to self-host under $1M in annual revenue. API: 25 free credits, then $0.065 per SD 3.5 Large image.
What users report
- On Trustpilot, stability.ai scores 1.8 from 16 reviews covering the whole company, not just its image models; the recurring complaint is billing after cancellation. Trustpilot ↗

- At launch, Stability warned SD 3.5 might repeat the prompting errors of SD 3 Medium. TechCrunch ↗
- Stability's API sells inpaint, outpaint, erase, search-and-replace and background tools, plus sketch, structure and style-reference controls. Stability AI ↗
- ComfyUI, a free node-based local interface that runs Stable Diffusion and other models, has 145,000 GitHub stars. GitHub ↗
- Self-hosting SD 3.5 is free for individuals and organisations under $1M in annual revenue. Stability AI ↗
- The API gives 25 free credits; SD 3.5 Large then costs $0.065 per image. Stability AI ↗
- The Stable Assistant page now redirects to an enterprise custom-model page, so Stability's consumer app is no longer offered there. Stability AI ↗
- Under the Community License you own your outputs; commercial users must register, and the free licence ends above $1M in annual revenue. Stability AI ↗
- On Trustpilot, stability.ai scores 1.8 from 16 reviews covering the whole company, not just its image models; the recurring complaint is billing after cancellation. Trustpilot ↗

How we score AI image generators
Each tool gets a score from 0 to 10 on six pillars. The overall score is their weighted average, and the ranking is the order of the overall scores — neither is set by hand. The anchors below are the same for every tool on this page.
| Pillar | Weight | What earns a 10 | What a 5 looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
Image quality How good the pictures are, by blind-vote arena results and by what published reviewers conclude. | 30% | A top-five model in the Artificial Analysis text-to-image arena, and reviewers rank it among the best they tried. | Well outside the arena's top 30, or reviewers find its output usable but clearly behind the leaders. |
Prompt accuracy and text Whether it draws what was asked — counts, positions, styles — and spells words inside the image correctly. | 20% | Reviewers find it follows complex prompts and renders long text legibly, with few retries. | Handles simple prompts; misses details in complex ones and garbles text beyond a few words. |
Editing and control What you can do after the first image: edit by instruction, repaint a region, use reference images, keep a character or style consistent. | 15% | Edit by instruction, region repaint, reference images and consistent characters or styles, all in the product. | Generation and variations, plus one editing tool. |
Free access and price What you get without paying, and what the cheapest paid plan costs, read off the vendor's own pricing page. | 15% | A free plan you can keep using, not a trial, and paid plans from about $10 a month. | Only a trial or a very small free allowance, or paid plans from about $20–30 a month. |
Usage rights Whether you may use the images commercially, who owns them, and whether the vendor stands behind that. | 10% | You own the output on every plan, commercial use is allowed, and the vendor indemnifies you on the plans scored here, not only under enterprise contracts. | Commercial use only on paid plans or under a condition, such as a company-revenue cap. |
What users report App-store and Trustpilot ratings, and the complaints that recur in user reviews — billing, refusals, support, outages. | 10% | High ratings on the app stores and on Trustpilot, with no recurring complaint. | Mixed ratings, or one complaint that recurs across reviews. A tool with too few user reviews to judge also gets a 5. |

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best AI image generator?
- ChatGPT, at 9.0 out of 10, ahead of Gemini at 8.6. OpenAI's models lead the blind-vote arena and ChatGPT has the stronger editing tools; Gemini renders text very reliably and costs less to upgrade. Reviewers split: Zapier picks ChatGPT, CNET picks Nano Banana 2.
- What is the best free AI image generator?
- ChatGPT and Gemini both make images on their free plans, and reviewers split: PCMag calls ChatGPT the best for free users, Christy Tucker says Gemini. OpenAI says Images 2.5 is available to every ChatGPT user; Gemini's free plan runs on Flash-Lite, which Google pairs with the lighter Nano Banana 2 Lite.
- Is ChatGPT the best AI for image generation?
- Yes, narrowly: it scores 9.0 here, ahead of Gemini at 8.6. OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 models top Artificial Analysis's blind-vote arena and Zapier names ChatGPT its best overall, while CNET picks Google's Nano Banana 2 and Gemini costs less to upgrade.
- Which AI image generator is safest for commercial use?
- Adobe Firefly, for its own models: Adobe says their output is safe for commercial use and indemnifies eligible enterprise customers. Partner models inside Firefly fall outside that standard indemnity. OpenAI also indemnifies Enterprise and API customers for output, and Microsoft's consumer Copilot terms allow personal use only.
- Which AI image generator is best for text in images?
- Gemini and ChatGPT both render text reliably in recent tests: TechRadar's Nano Banana 2.1 poster came out word-perfect, and Zapier found ChatGPT's text accurate. Ideogram, built around text, still sets longer phrases neatly, according to Digital Camera World, but trails both on image quality.
- Does Midjourney have a free plan?
- No. Midjourney says no free trial is offered on its website or in Discord; only its separate niji・journey app has a limited trial. Basic costs $10 a month or $96 a year, and images are public unless you pay for Pro or Mega.
